Broadway Performance Workshops for Students
Enhance your group’s Broadway experience with educational and enlightening workshops and behind-the-scenes tours. Taught by Broadway professionals, workshops and master classes are a great way to enrich the theatrical experience. Perfect for students of all ages, workshops can be tailored to fit the needs of any group. We can arrange a broad range of class subjects, including dance, vocal and instrumental music, acting, auditioning, improvisation, and technical theatre.
AUDITION WORKSHOP
Monologues, cold readings, and the presentation of entering a room are some of the elements touched upon in this master class for actors. Broadway/Film professionals conduct this workshop in a nurturing environment. Because this is a master class, not all students will perform their pieces, but will actively participate in the discussion of auditioning. Students will gain a vast amount of knowledge by watching their peers work. Requirements: Students should have at least two years of theatre training and also have a one minute contemporary monologue prepared that is age appropriate – from a play of the twentieth or twenty-first century.
BALLET DANCE
In this workshop, ballet technique taught by an experienced teacher with a background at Joffrey, New York City Ballet, or American Ballet Theatre. The class includes barre work, centre exercises, and learning a full combination.
HIP-HOP WORKSHOP
An energetic session concentrating on freestyle, popping, turfing, krumping, and jerkin’, with breaking (depending on the skill level of the students). This particular style of dance originated from the streets and is now used in music videos and pop concerts.
MEET THE ARTIST SERIES – Q & A
Meet some of Broadway’s most gifted artists in an intimate setting, where you’ll hear the experiences of a professional actor, director, choreographer, casting director or agent. The artist will discuss the challenges of the business, backstage anecdotes and career choices. Past participants have included Tony® Award winners, Tony-nominees, and actors from current Broadway Shows such as Dear Evan Hansen, Come From Away, Hamilton, Aladdin, and many others.
ORCHESTRAL WORKSHIP – MUSIC
This workshop allows student and professional orchestras to study selections from a current or past Broadway score in a supportive and challenging environment. The conductor or an assistant conductor from a current Broadway production will lead this musical master class in rhythmic intricacies, intonation, melodic phrasing, clarity, and technical power. To take full advantage of this intensive workshop, the orchestra should have familiarity with a score of their choice and be prepared with questions. Depending on the sight reading level of the orchestra, the orchestra may also have one or two songs rehearsed so the participants can follow the conductor with ease. The instructor will also answer questions about playing in a Broadway orchestra and how to prepare when auditioning as a Broadway musician. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore music of the Great White Way.
THE ART OF THE QUICK CHANGE
Your group will have the chance to learn how Broadway professionals have only seconds to change costumes for a quick scene change. Everyone will have the opportunity to see this quick change happen and then volunteers will be able to take part in this session. Participants will learn how it takes many people on and off stage to keep a Broadway show moving. From lights, sound, music, costumes and set changing, a scene can go from a whole different setting in 30 seconds. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about careers, costumes, set pieces, etc. A very exciting, interactive workshop!
