Review: Discover the magic of Alaska with Silversea
Orbit World Travel's Conference and Event Manager, Ros Chillingworth, gives her honest thoughts on experiencing Alaska with Silversea.
After nearly 40 years working in travel, I am lucky to say that I have very few un-ticked bucket list travel goals. Don’t get me wrong, I could list 100 if the $100 million Powerball came my way, but in truth, I have seen more than most could dream of. However, the one destination that has eluded me, until now, is Alaska. After several failed attempts, I finally had the opportunity to plan and execute my long-awaited holiday to Alaska!
Now, I am a novice when it comes to cruising, but it is certainly the best way to start an Alaskan adventure. There are many different cruising companies to choose from, including small, medium, and large ships. My pick was Silver Muse by Silversea, a smaller luxury ship with about 500 guests and almost as many staff - what an amazing ratio! All the accommodations onboard are spacious suites with private balconies and butler service.
And for all the foodies out there, your tastebuds will rejoice as Silversea serve up gourmet meals! The restaurant styles are varied, with some exclusive options needing reservations and others allowing the flexibility of ad hoc dining. The selection of included premium drinks is extensive, including a personalised minibar in your room. Seriously, you couldn’t want for anything! This fully inclusive holiday allows you to unpack, sit back, and enjoy everything on offer.
The Alaskan highlights for me were:
- Juneau: (accessible only by air or sea) Known for King Crabs and the Mendenhall Glacier. I even saw whales, seals, and an orca in the distance.
- Skagway: Home to the White Pass Railway, offering a window into the gold rush era.
- Ketchikan: Famous for black bears and more salmon than you can imagine.
In 2024, Silver Muse and Silver Nova will offer an expanded variety of options in Alaska, with 31 sailings devoted to exploring the region's incredible natural beauty and wildlife. Including:
- A series of seven-day itineraries will showcase classic frontier towns like Ketchikan and Sitka, as well as Valdez—gateway to the magnificent Columbia Glacier, the second largest tidewater glacier in North America.
- Several new extended voyages of 10 and 11 days will feature longer stays in Juneau to discover one of the largest wilderness areas in the United States, including the iconic Mendenhall Glacier and the Mendenhall Ice Caves.
- Highlighting the new Alaska program are Silver Muse's 14-day combination voyages, linking back-to-back cruises of seven days to create one unforgettable journey.
A fun fact: Alaska has 54,563 kilometres of tidal shoreline, offering plenty to explore. On my next trip to Alaska, I hope to include the famous Denali National Park.
